about

From Brenda:

Sometimes song lyrics will form with vowels first. I can hear that something with “oh” or “ah” will fit with the melody. Or it might be the rhythm that generates a sentence, and the next step is to follow a meter or reach for a rhyming word to continue the song. Working through this process might take a matter of hours, or it can take days while the brain constantly processes thoughts and sounds.

Or sometimes a melody will have to wait years to become a completed song. The melody to THE RISING TIDE was circling in my brain since around age 12; and how it stayed in my head for the next twenty years is a mystery to me. But it remained crystal clear. I was intermittently trying to fit that melody to chords or another song snippet during those years, but nothing worked well.

In 1992, when Wild Carnation was putting our first songs together, Rich had guitar chords and a riff that, when I heard them, seemed they could mesh with that old melody. Most of the melody fit, and I left the unused part behind.

The lyrics simply paint a picture of a California (“western side”) beach setting. When I was approximately 20, I wrote a long tale and called it “An Aesop’s Fable” to fit with that melody, but I dropped the idea. Those lyrics remain in an old writing journal, and they were obviously a far cry from writing about a California beach scene.

lyrics

The waves rolled up to the other side
Children danced in the shining tide
Lose yourself in the aqua blue
Sand and foam and turtles, too.
We all live on the western side,
and we’re glad we’re alive.
It brings you up and it turns you ‘round
To the air, dive back down
Float on top like the bubbles do
Clutch the sand, the muddy hue.

about

Delmore Recording Society Nashville, Tennessee

Delmore Recording Society exists to expose singular artists that don’t quite fit in to the world. The pursuit and discovery of lost tapes is another side of that mission.

We strive to bring something of value into the world…music that might enhance our appreciation of an artist that was under recorded, or whose recordings were never released due to some vagary of the business.
